Emerson Zanzibar Music Award 2022 – The Competition
The board of the Emersonโs Zanzibar Foundation is delighted to announce its sixth Music Award 2022.ย
The award for this year is intended for women singers. under the theme, ‘Women Arise‘. This follows the Sauti za Busara 2022 theme ofย ‘Amplifying Womenโs Voices‘.
This is a great opportunity for emerging women singers/lyricist of Unguja and Pemba to promote themselves locally and Internationally at a platform, which aims to inspire and award local talents.
The award for the musicians include, prize money of 2 million TZS, an engraved trophy and a framed certificate for the winner.
Competition Details
The Sixth Emerson Zanzibar Foundation Music Award 2022 will be part of the Sauti za Busara Music Festival 2022.
- Theme: โWomen Ariseโ for women singers & performers
- Competition Date and Time: Thursday 10th Feb, 2022 at 4โ6pm (after Asri to Maghrib prayers)
- Venue: Forodhani Gardens, Band stand
- Event: Public

The award will be presented on stage at Sauti za Busara in the Old Fort, on Sunday 13th of February 2022 at around 8pm.ย

Recipient of the the 6th Emersonโs Zanzibar Foundation Music Award is Lailat Faki Kombo
There were 8 contestants, and each gave a memorable performance! It was a healthy competition demonstrated through mutual support and a positive attitude, partly conveyed through melodious ululations.
The contestants all attended a pre-competition training workshop, organised and conducted by the Foundation.
The panel of judges assessed the performance of the 8 singers by a set criteria, and selected Lailat as the worthy recipient of the award.
Our congratulations extend to all the participating singers for their outstanding performances.
Lailat is an up and coming talented singer. This is her second time competing for a prestigious award. She showed additional talents in the filmโ โโThe Rite of Awakeningโโ.
The Award was presented at a lively ceremony on the closing night of the Sauti za Busara International Music Festival in the Old Fort.
A post-award celebration will be held in honour of all participating artists at Emerson Spice Secret Garden.

As part of our commitment to supporting artistic growth beyond the festival, we helped ZIFF 2025 winner Mfaume Hassan Ally access a unique professional development opportunity ๐
TATAKI, in collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam, held a playwriting workshop. With the support and consultation of Professor Mhando, Mfaume was able to participate in a program he would not normally have been eligible to join.

In this thought-provoking exhibition, Jan van Esch transforms abandoned clothing into a powerful commentary on culture, identity, and the textile waste crisis. By scavenging garments from Amsterdam, Berlin, and Dar es Salaam, Jan highlights how clothing can serve as a communicative system bridging cultural divides through visual language.
The journey of clothing, from cherished garment to discarded waste reveals complex layers of meaning. Janโs patchworks and intricate drawings celebrate these fragments, bringing new life and story to what we wear and waste. Through his art, he invites us to move beyond monologue to dialogue, questioning how we engage with textiles in our daily lives.
