Zanzibar Visual Arts & Film Awards 2022
The Emersonโs Zanzibar Foundation have announced details of two of their prestigious awards for June 2022.ย
Firstly the Visual Art Award by local artists will be presented, for the second year running, for the best art work submitted.ย All theย art submissions will also be on display at The Emersonโs Foundation Art Gallery, newly created at Emerson on Hurumzi Hotel.
In addition Emerson Zanzibar Foundation’s seventh Film Award for the best production by local Zanzibari film makers will be announced during the Zanzibar International Film Festival(ZIFF) in June 2022.
The theme for this year for both awards will be ‘Maisha ya Zanzibar’ (‘Zanzibar Life’).

The theme this year; Maisha ya Zanzibar will help the local artists to present their interpretation of Zanzibarโs diverse life and its heritage.
Likewise the local film-makers will focus on stories about life in Zanzibar.ย
Promoting Zanzibari Artists & Film Makers
Emerson’s Zanzibar Foundation for manyย years has been a leading organisation honouring local Zanzibari musicians, artists and film makers. They continue to provide active support for talented Zanzibaris, to gain recognition and the opportunities they need and deserve.ย
An important core of this collaboration is to promote unity within the artistic community in Zanzibar. All artists who participate share the aim to promote arts in Zanzibar in general and hope that it will be valued more by the wider community.ย

As part of our commitment to supporting artistic growth beyond the festival, we helped ZIFF 2025 winner Mfaume Hassan Ally access a unique professional development opportunity ๐
TATAKI, in collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam, held a playwriting workshop. With the support and consultation of Professor Mhando, Mfaume was able to participate in a program he would not normally have been eligible to join.

In this thought-provoking exhibition, Jan van Esch transforms abandoned clothing into a powerful commentary on culture, identity, and the textile waste crisis. By scavenging garments from Amsterdam, Berlin, and Dar es Salaam, Jan highlights how clothing can serve as a communicative system bridging cultural divides through visual language.
The journey of clothing, from cherished garment to discarded waste reveals complex layers of meaning. Janโs patchworks and intricate drawings celebrate these fragments, bringing new life and story to what we wear and waste. Through his art, he invites us to move beyond monologue to dialogue, questioning how we engage with textiles in our daily lives.
